課程目標 |
This course is designed to probe into the intricate relation between infantile experience and the formation of the (sexed) subject. What is the impact of infantile experience or internalized object relation on emotional development? If an apparent childhood memory is not necessarily a memory of a real event, how is it, as a derivative of fantasy, related to the development of one’s personality? What is the interplay between conscious and unconscious fantasy fabricated during the early period? In what way will the mechanisms of defense employed in early years influence the subject? Do daydreaming and play, so central to children’s daily life, signal for adults nothing but regression? Or is it more likely that, as Winnicott suggests, the child and the adult are free to be creative and to discover their individual self only in playing? To answer these questions, this course will familiarize students with Freudian theory concerning infantile fantasy and defensive operations common in childhood. It will also examine how Anna Freud and D. W. Winnicott modify Freud’s theory to formulate their own ideas. In addition to introducing different analysts’ interpretations of infantile experience, this course will bring Walter Benjamin’s concept of play into dialogue to see if, by complicating the mimetic and fictional dimension of play, Benjamin ushers us into a new way to approach childhood experience. |

Requirements:
1. class participation (40%): read the assigned articles before class and present your comments at each meeting to facilitate in-depth discussion
2. term paper (60%): 8-10 pages minimum for the first-year MA students, and 12 to 15 pages otherwise
